Tax authorities uncover massive fraud
A routine check on 600 tax returns by the tax office has uncovered suspect fiscal deductions totalling €65 mln, the Telegraaf newspaper reports.
In 355 of the returns, huge sums for schooling, alimony and donations were deducted against tax, the paper says.
More than 200 people claimed over €100,000 each for extraordinary medical costs, 45 of them put the figure at €1 mln and one individual wanted a deduction of €19.5 mln.
The highest deductions for alimony, schooling and donations were €5 mln, €2.7 mln and €4.5 mln respectively.
‘We have every reason to believe that this is just the top of the iceberg,’ a spokesperson for the tax authorities was quoted as saying.
