School can ban head scarves

The Catholic Petrus Canisius College in Alkmaar was not outside its rights to refuse to employee a trainee worker who wore a Muslim head scarf, the equal opportunities commission has ruled.

The commission said the school was discriminating against the woman on the grounds of her religion but that the law allows schools which are not run by the local authorities to do this.
The commission said the school had to make it clear to potential teachers and other staff that head scarves are not allowed.
