The jury of the European Urban and Regional Planning Awards praised the influence of local people and organisations on the reconstruction and the transparent cooperation between planners, developers and architects.
The Enschede firework disaster of May 13 2000 was triggered by a fire at the SE Fireworks depot. The fire led to an enormous explosion that left 23 dead and 947 injured. About 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. The cause of the blast has never been fully explained.
