Groningen return to top of premier league

FC Groningen returned to the top of Dutch football’s premier league at the weekend, after beating Sparta of Rotterdam 3-0 at home on Saturday.


NAC Breda, who had held the number-one spot, could only manage a 0-0 draw away to FC Utrecht on Sunday and slipped to second place. Both teams have 16 points but FC Groningen has a better goal average.
AZ of Alkmaar, in third spot, continued their good form of past few weeks, beating FC Volendam 3-0 at home on Saturday.
Of the big clubs, only Ajax won, disposing of NEC of Nijmegen 2-0 at home in Amsterdam on Sunday. Ajax moved up to fifth place, one place above reigning champions PSV. The Eindhoven team lost 3-2 to Roda JC of Kerkrade at home on Saturday.
Feyenoord of Rotterdam are fourth from bottom, after snatching an injury-time equaliser in their 2-2 draw with SC Heerenveen at home on Sunday.
