Couples pay for babies from US – NRC
At least six Dutch couples have paid for babies carried by a surrogate mother in the US, reports Saturday’s NRC Handelsblad.
The couples paid between $100,000 and $150,000 for each surrogate pregnancy. The payments were made to the company Growing Generations.
Another three couples are currently in the process of receiving a child via the same company, says the NRC.
In the Netherlands it is illegal to pay for a surrogate pregnancy, which is seen as a last resort after all other options have been exhausted. By buying babies in the US, couples are circumventing Dutch law, says the NRC. Paying surrogate mothers is legal in the US.
Irresponsible
The paper quoted a spokesman for the in vitro fertilisation centre at the VU hospital in Amsterdam as saying that Growing Generations’ actions were ‘irresponsible’.
‘This is not how it should be done. A surrogate mother gets into an emotional rollercoaster. It is hard for a woman to give up a baby just after it has been born,’ the spokesman said.
