Councils put €500m into car lease group

Some 15 local councils and provincial government bodies have lent a combined total of €431 mln to Leaseplan, the car lease company, broadcaster RTL Z reports.

The lending habits of local and provincial governments are already under scrutiny after it was revealed that they had placed more than €200 mln of their funds with banks that had collapsed such as Landsbanki in Iceland.
Several parties say they are fed up with the councils creative financial policy and have asked the government to explain the situation.
Leaseplan, however, has a banking licence and offers 5.8% interest to councils prepared to lend money for fixed term, RTL Z reports.
