Councils invested in troubled banks

Goes local council in Zeeland has become the latest Dutch authority to admit it has money invested in Iceland’s Landsbanki bank.

Goes, which has 36,000 residents, has several million euros invested in the bank, which is now under the protection of the Icelandic government, a council spokesman told news agency ANP. The council refused to say how much it has invested abroad.
The home affairs ministry is currently assessing Dutch local authority exposure to troubled financial institutions. So far, €58m has been identified, public broadcaster Nos reported at the weekend.
The province of Zeeland, for example, has €5m invested with US merchant bank Lehman Brothers, which has gone bankrupt.
