Compensation for Schiphol fire survivors
Sixteen survivors of the fire at the Schiphol detention centre which killed 11 people three years ago are to be given damages of €100,000 by the state for the trauma they have suffered, reported Trouw at the weekend.
The money will only be paid out when the survivor can prove he suffers from a serious psychiatric disorder as a result of the fire, the paper said.
Last year all 40 survivors were awarded €1,750 compensation. Most of them have been given a residency permit, the paper said.
The justice department has also made a payment to relatives of eight of those who died in the fire but will not say how much, reported Trouw.
A Libyan man was sentenced to three years in jail for starting the fire in his cell of the deportation centre at Schiphol on October 26, 2005.
A government investigation concluded that the authorities were largely to blame for the deaths of inmates as the complex did not meet fire safety regulations. Two ministers and the local mayor resigned over the affair.
