Commission to advise on Dutch constitution

Home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst is to set up a government commission to advise on changes to the Dutch constitution, reports news website Nu.nl on Wednesday.

The Labour minister is acting against the wishes of opposition parties who say she should not set up a commission without the broad support of parliament, the website says.
Earlier this year research by the home affairs ministry showed that most Dutch people have no idea what is in the constitution, although they recognise its importance.
The current version of the constitution is 25 years old and Ter Horst says its language is flat and archaic, and its contents and structure are not transparent.
