FC Twente was the only Dutch club to win in the first round of group matches for the Uefa Cup. Twente beat Spain’s Racing Club Santander 1-0 at home.


Amsterdam’s Ajax lost 2-1 away to Aston Villa in England. Heerenveen were beaten 3-1 by AC Milaan. Nijmegen’s NEC lost 3-2 to Zagreb and Rotterdam’s Feyenoord went down 3-0 to AS Nancy.
