University offers lectures on parenting
A university lecture series about bringing up children will be open to parents as well as students and professionals from education and youth care sectors, according to a story in Saturday’s De Volkskrant.
Amsterdam University has lined up several top scientists and academics for the lectures, which start on October 2. ‘Lots of parents are wrestling with the task of bringing up their children, while parents on average do a good job,’ said psychologist Carine Ex, who organised the series.
But parents should not expect an academic version of Super Nanny or other fly-on-the-wall TV series about bringing up children. ‘Those programmes often highlight one aspect: how one can use punishment and rewards to get badly behaving children to change their attitude. The lectures go much further than that.’
Parents are much more uncertain than in the past because society has let go of the strict rules for upbringing, Ex tells the paper.
