Olympic medals cost €4.4m each
The 16 medals won by Dutch athletes in the Olympic Games in Beijing cost the country €4.4m each, according to figures worked out by the national audit office, reports Thursday’s AD newspaper.
For the past four years, top sport has received €17.7m a year in state subsidies and from the national lottery. This totals €70.8m, which works out at an average of €4.4m per medal, says the audit office.
Medals won by paralympians were cheaper. They received €1.8m a year so each of the 22 medals won cost €324.000.
