Holland stands firm over Serbia

The Netherlands and Belgium have again refused to approve a European Union trade agreement with Serbia, saying the country has still not fully cooperated with the Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

A number of EU countries want to reward Serbia for handing over former Serb leader Radovan Karadzic to the tribunal.
The ‘best evidence’ that Serbia is cooperating fully would be handing over former Bosnian Serb army leader Ratko Mladic, foreign minister Maxime Verhagen was reported by ANP as saying.
Mladic is said to be responsible for the genocide of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica, which was under Dutch military protection at the time.
Verhagen says too that Belgrade must develop a proper protection programme for witnesses, ANP reports. The issue will be on the EU agenda again in April.
