Fortis shares hard hit on liquidity rumours

Shares in Dutch-Belgian financial services group Fortis dropped sharply in Amsterdam on Thursday, hitting an intra-day low of €5.49 by mid-afternoon, a decline of over 20%.

The drop, prompted by rumours of funding problems, took Fortis to its lowest share price since 1994, news agency Reuters said. Fortis ended the session down 6.25% at €6.55.
‘The rumors about the Dutch regulator calling upon Rabobank to support our liquidity are not true,’ Filip Dierckx, head of Fortis’ banking arm, was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. ‘This speculation pushing down the shares is unacceptable.’
