Dutch stance on Serbia ‘unfair’
The Netherlands’ refusal to unfreeze the trade-related part of an EU agreement with Serbia is unfair, but the country still hopes to join the organisation by 2014, Serbian deputy prime minister Bozidar Djelic told website EUObserver.com.
On Monday, the Netherlands blocked the unfreezing of an interim deal – part of a pre-accession agreement signed in April – to improve trading links between the EU and Serbia.
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen says he will not approve the deal unless war crimes suspects Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic are handed over to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
