Clampdown urged on New Year violence

Extra surveillance cameras, street bans for known troublemakers, an increase in firework prices and better preparation by the police are needed to cut down on rioting during the New Year festivities, says a government committee.


Every year hundreds of people are arrested and dozens of cars set on fire as the celebrations get out of hand. The committee was set up to look at ways of bringing the festivities under control.
