Olympics: dressage gold for Van Grunsven

Anky van Grunsven took her third individual dressage gold medal at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday.

Van Grunsven, who began the afternoon’s event trailing Germany’s Isabell Werth, won gold at the Sydney and Athens Olympics. This is her sixth Olympics.
The Dutch dressage team earlier took the silver.
The Dutch women’s water polo team reached the final in that event with a surprise 8-7 win over Hungary. They take on the USA, reigning world champions for the title.
The Dutch men’s hockey team is also on course for a medal, reaching the semi-finals early on Tuesday morning with a 4-2 win over Pakistan.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Dutch dreams were shattered. Medal hopeful Epke Zonderland made a good start in the final of the high bar in the gymnastics but his hands slipped about half way through his routine and he ended in seventh place.
Disappointment
In the velodrome, cyclists Willy Kanis and Theo Bos both failed to win a medal in the sprint events, coming in fourth and seventh respectively. The Dutch cycling team, which arrived in Beijing with high hopes, is returning home with just one medal – Marianne Vos’ gold in the points race.
‘It is not easy to say what went wrong but it is obvious that Britain is dominant,’ coach Peter Pieters told news agency ANP. ‘We have to close the gap… we had expected and hoped for more.’
