MPs draw up draft law to ban squatting
MPs from the Christian Democrats, right-wing Liberals (VVD) and orthodox Christian group ChristenUnie have drawn up a bill to ban squatting, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.
The paper says the draft law has been sent to the government’s advisory committee SER for its opinions.
The draft law, which carries a maximum prison term of 32 months for offenders, would also make it easier for local authorities to take over buildings which had been left over for long periods, the Telegraaf says.
Squatting has long been a part of the Dutch political scene but the movement has come under fire in recent months for opportunism and violence.
