Mayor wants information on paedophiles
Mayors should be informed when paedophiles move to their city, says Roermond mayor Henk van Beers in the NRC Handelsblad.
Van Beers believes public unrest can be avoided if mayors are informed when a convicted paedophile moves into their city, the newspaper reports. He wants the law to be changed so that the justice department is obliged to provide such information.
His comments are a reaction to a petition by the inhabitants of a Roermond neighbourhood which demanded that a 44-year-old convicted paedophile, who was rearrested this week suspected of sexual activities with boys, be expelled from the city.
Right-wing Liberal party (VVD) MP Fred Teeven has demanded an explanation from the justice and home affairs ministries which he claims have ignored a call by a parliament majority in 2007 to inform mayors about paedophiles moving into their area.
