The number of people claiming welfare benefits has fallen by 20,000 over the past year, a drop of some 7%, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.

In total, some 268,000 people were claiming welfare (bijstand) at the end of June. The drop was largely due to the long-term unemployed finding work, the CBS said.
