Escaped pelican hangs out in Zeeland
The young pelican which escaped from Amsterdam´s Artis zoo two weeks ago is now hanging out in Zeeland, according to the Parool.
The bird, which got out before its wings could be clipped, has now traveled further than Snelle Pelle (speedy Pelle), the pelican that escaped from the zoo in 2005, the paper says.
‘This one is turbo-charged,’ says keeper Jaap Versloot.
So far only one attempt has been made to recapture the bird by creeping up on him through the reeds. But when they got there, he had gone.
And a lady in Andijk who assured officials she had locked him up in her garden shed had captured a cormorant instead.
For a time, the pelican hung out with a group of spoonbills heading for Assen but was soon off on his travels again. ‘Perhaps they were too slow for him,’ says Versloot. ‘This one wants to get ahead.’
