Conflict over diplomat’s UN cash ended
Former aid minister Eveline Herfkens is to spend one year working for the UN’s millennium campaign for the token sum of $1 to end the conflict over government help she received while working for the world body.
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen had demanded the repayment of €190,000 paid towards the rent on her apartment in New York between 2002 and 2006. The subsidy broke UN rules.
A UN investigation into the affair found that Herfkens, the Dutch government and the UN itself were to blame.
Herfkens refused to repay the money, but has now offered to work for the millennium campaign for free instead.
Sources quote Verhagen as saying he considers the issue to be now closed.
