DNA test reveals truth about ‘male’ athlete
Dutch athlete Foekje Dillema, banned from athletics in 1950 after officials ruled she was a man, was a genetic mosaic, according to a DNA test carried out at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
The results were revealed on tv show Ander Tijden on Sunday.
Using DNA extracted from her clothing, scientists discovered she had the same number of female (xx) as male (xy) chromosomes – an extremely rare condition caused by either a genetic mutation or the fusion of two fertilised eggs.
But on the grounds of her appearance and behaviour, she was definitely female, the researchers said.
Dillema, whose 21.4 second Dutch record in the 200 metres was erased from the record books, died in December 2007.
