Illegal waste transports mount
Rotterdam port is playing an increasingly important role in the trade in illegal waste disposal, the Volkskrant claims on Thursday, without quoting sources or figures.
According to a report by the Dutch environment ministry, 15% of waste transports within Europe break the law. In 9% the paperwork was wrong, in 6% of cases the transport itself was illegal.
Checks have been stepped up since the Probo Koala affair, in which tonnes of toxic waste were dumped in Ivory Coast.
