‘Cabinet considers embryo commission’

The cabinet is considering setting up a committee of ethical experts to advise on embryo selection in an effort to find a way out of the current impasse, news agency ANP reports on Monday, quoting ministerial sources.

The experts would assess each individual couple who request their embryos be tested for genetic diseases, the agency said.
Minor coalition party ChristenUnie is totally opposed to the idea of embryo selection, as are many in the dominant Christian Democrats. But Labour, the third coalition party, says it is determined to press ahead with allowing selection for a virulent form of breast cancer.
