Bid to stop massive factory farms fails

Efforts to stop the development of massive factory farms in Overijssel province failed on Wednesday night after not enough councillors backed calls to re-think the region’s rural development plans.

Some 70,000 locals had called for the plans to be re-opened to incorporate a ban on mega farms.
Some 12 plans to build factory farms for a total 180,000 pigs and 380,000 hens have been lodged in the province, according to figures from environmental lobby group Milieudefensie.
