Amsterdam backs old car ban

Amsterdam city council has voted in favour of banning heavily polluting vehicles from the area inside the city’s ring road, Elsevier reports on Friday.

Earlier this week, transport minister Camiel Eurlings said it was impossible to stop the council imposing a ban.
MPs have agreed to give the city council access to car registration details – which it needs to implement the ban – only when all other steps to improve air quality have been taken.
It is still not clear whether the council will go ahead with the ban. It plans to check air quality targets in mid 2009 to see if the veto for older cars is still necessary.
