Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar, heralded in all the papers as the hero of Manchester for his role in Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea in the Champions League final, says he knew he was going to stop the deciding penalty.

‘It is very easy to say, but that is the way it was,’ Van der Sar (37) told a tv reporter. ‘I’ve wanted this my entire career and this was it.’
Van der Sar has to report for duty with the Dutch national squad at their training camp in Hoenderloo on Monday.
