UN diplomat should repay rent money
Dutch UN diplomat Evelien Herfkens can be ordered to repay the $250,000 she was wrongly given to help pay the rent on her New York apartment, the Telegraaf reported on Tuesday.
The paper said the UN told staff in an internal document in 2002 that extra help from non-UN sources was not allowed. Until now it has been unclear whether or not Herfkens was aware of the situation, the paper said.
Last week, foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said that as long as the former aid minister says she did not know the subsidy broke UN rules, the government cannot claim it back.
