Rotterdam city council is to poll its residents about whether or not they want to hold a referendum on the city’s next mayor.

Ivo Opstelten will leave at the end of this year and no successor has yet been found.
Referendums to chose a new mayor in Utrecht and Eindhoven failed to attract enough voters to be binding and were widely regarded as a failure.
