Death penalty not backed by majority

Some 59% of the Dutch are opposed to the death penalty in principle and 26% would support it in cases of terrorist attacks which led to multiple deaths, according to an opinion poll by Maurice de Hond.

Most death penalty supporters back Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration PVV party and Rita Verdonk’s populist TON movement.
Verdonk herself is opposed to the death penalty because of mistakes made by the legal system, she told tv programme Business Class on Sunday.
