Air France-KLM takeover of Alitalia halted
Italian airline Alitalia broke off takeover talks with Air France-KLM on Wednesday evening and its chairman Maurizio Prato, who backed the merger, resigned.
A spokesman for the Dutch-French airline said he had ‘no idea’ if this was the definite end for the talks. He said the breakdown had been prompted by Italian unions which ‘came up with a takeover plan which was completely different to ours’.
In 2002, KLM itself pulled out of takeover talks with the Italians.
