Traffic fines to go up 20%

Traffic fines are to go up by an average of 20% on Tuesday, reports ANP news service.

In practice most fines will rise by €15 or €20 so that, for example, using a mobile phone while behind the wheel will cost €150 instead of the current €130.
‘The idea is that the more dangerous the violation, the higher the fine,’ Jos Steenhouder of the traffic bureau tells ANP.
Last year a total 12.6 million traffic fines were issued, 700,000 more than 2006, according to official figures. But the number has gone down in the first two months of 2008, says ANP.
