Paulien van Deutekom took the silver medal in the 1,500 metre speed skating event at the world single distance championships in Nagano on Friday.
Van Deutekom lost the gold to Canada’s Kristina Groves by 0.46 of a second. Top favourite Renate Groenewold was a disappointing seventh.
On Thursday Sven Kramer retained the 5,000 metre world title, which he took in Salt Lake City last year. It is Kramer’s second world title of the season, after winning the Allround in Berlin.
