No prison in bag-snatch death
A woman who drove after the 19-year-old youth who stole her handbag and killed him by pinning him against a tree, has been given 180 hours of community service for dangerous driving.
The public prosecution department called for a 2.5 year jail term for manslaughter but the judges said there was no evidence the woman had deliberately tried to kill the youth. The length of time the case has taken to come to court – three years – was also a factor in sentencing, news agency ANP said.
The woman, known as Germaine C, is to appeal.
