The Noord-Holland provincial council has backed plans to flood 1,000 hectares of land in the far north of the province to create a massive lake for water sports.
Some 30 farms will have to be moved elsewhere when the nine kilometre lake, known as the Wieringerrandmeer, is created.
The province is putting over €300m into the project, which also involves the building of 2,000 new houses.
