Dutch quit smoking and drinking

The Dutch are living healthier lives according to figures published on Tuesday by the national statistics office CBS.


The percentage of smokers dropped from 29.6% in 2006 to 27.9% last year, a downward trend which began in 2004. The number of youngsters between 12 and 24 who have never smoked rose from 58% in 2001 to 66% in 2007.
The number of heavy drinkers also dropped, from 11.3% in 2006 to 10.7% last year.
