Silvio Berlusconi, tipped to become Italy’s prime minister after April’s vote, said on Friday he would veto Alitalia’s takeover by Air France-KLM if he wins the election.
News agency ANP quoted Berlusconi as saying the bid was unacceptable in a number of areas and arrogant. He called on Italian investors to put together a rival takeover package.
Alitalia’s unions are also opposed to the Dutch-French takeover, as is the operator of Malpensa airport near Milan. But the current government, led by Romano Prodi supports it.
