No majority for wild animal ban in circuses

There is no parliamentary majority for the speedy introduction of a ban on wild animals in circuses, reports ANP news agency after last week’s debate on animal welfare was continued in the house on Monday.

MPs want to wait for the outcome of an investigation started six months ago by agriculture minister Gerda Verburg which is due at the end of 2008.
In last week’s debate a majority of MPs agreed there should be a ban.
The possibility of a ban brought petitions from interested parties for and against the motion, reported Saturday’s NRC.
The action group Wild Animals Out of the Tent says it has collected 43,000 signatures while the society of Dutch circus owners is petitioning parliament not to make a decision without thinking it through properly.
