‘Long-stay psychiatric prisons should be shut’
The long-stay units in tbs psychiatric prisons should be closed down, according to the criminal sentencing council RSJ in Tuesday’s Volkskrant.
There are now 143 long-stay places in tbc clinics, up from 21 in 2000, the council says.
Most people who are labeled ‘untreatable’ can be helped and should not be placed in long-stay units, the council says.
‘There are not that many psychopathic murderers out there,’ council chairman Arno Visser is quoted by the paper as saying. ‘Many long-stay patients cannot live on their own, but they do not need to be fenced in.
The justice ministry is currently working on a new policy to deal with long-stay psychiatric prisoners.
