German firm plans two offshore wind parks

German energy concern RWE has made provisional applications for the construction of two major off-shore wind parks in the Dutch North Sea.

RWE wants to build the wind parks 64 kilometres off the northern coast of Groningen and at IJmuiden, some 50 kms north-west of Amsterdam. The total capacity of the new turbines will be 2,000MW.
According to RWE, the Netherlands currently has offshore wind capacity of 108MW. The Dutch government’s target is 6,000MW.
