Fire damages biotech lab (update)
Considerable damage was done by a fire at the laboratory of biotech firm Pepscan in Lelystad in the early hours of Wednesday morning, reports ANP news service. The lab is located in the BioScience Center of Wageningen University.
Firemen from neighbouring stations were called in to bring the fire under control. The blaze was particularly fierce because the laboratory contains highly inflammable substances such as methanol, a spokesman for the fire brigade told ANP.
The building’s roof which is covered in asbestos was blown a hundred metres. But the laboratory is not close to homes so there was no risk to public health, the spokesman said.
It was not clear on Wednesday morning whether the fire had been deliverately started, reported ANP.
The laboratory, which is part of the Wageningen University, carries out research into farm animals covering everything from feedstuffs to disease control.
