Queen’s birthday dominates front pages

Queen Beatrix’s 70th birthday gets widespread coverage in all the media today.

Free newspaper De Pers says that the moaning about the cost of the royal family should stop, quoting economist Harry van Dalen who has worked out that the monarchy generates between €4bn and €5bn a year.
The €114m the public pay for the royals is peanuts in comparison, it says.
The Volkskrant’s front page is dominated by 70 passport-sized photos of queen Beatrix, one for every year of her life. But the paper’s article is critical. Beatrix has lost her position of authority, it claims and the majority of ‘her people’ want the queen removed from the government.
A poll of AD readers concluded that Beatrix scores high for her expertise but is not seen as spontaneous or approachable. Public broadcaster NOS marked the occasion with a television documentary which it says was watched by over two million people.
The queen will celebrate her birthday together with her sister Margriet who recently turned 65 at the Carré Theatre in Amsterdam on Friday.
Pop photographer Anton Corbijn took this year’s official state portraits of the queen.
