The Netherlands sees no reason to stop handing prisoners over to the Afghan authorities, despite Canadian claims that they may be being tortured, a spokesman for the Dutch defence ministry said on Thursday.
The spokesman said the Netherlands is continuing to invest in rebuilding the fragile Afghan legal and prison system.
For example, €10m is being put into improving police salaries and €15m to revamp the legal system, he said.
Meanwhile foreign affairs minister Minister Maxime Verhagen is ‘very worried’ at the news that an Afghan court has passed a death sentence on a 23-year-old Afghan journalist, reports ANP news service.
Verhagen has asked the Dutch embassy in Kabul to pass on his concerns to the Afghan government. The minister is currently in Syria as part of a four-day working visit to the Middle East.
