Information key to ending exploitation

Better information is key to ending the exploitation of eastern European workers in the Netherlands, social affairs minister Piet Hein Donner is reported as saying in Tuesday’s Volkskrant.

Donner was speaking after talks with a group of Poles in The Hague on Monday evening.
There are an estimated 100,000 people from the new EU states in the Netherlands, 80% of whom are Polish. Those at the meeting told the minister they are often exploited by employment agencies, working illegally long hours for a minimum wage.
Last December during the ‘Polish summit’ in Rotterdam Donner said he would introduce stricter controls for employment agencies and tougher checks on working conditions.
