A tropical pirapitinga fish has been rescued from a heron which was having trouble swallowing it by two Leiden council cleaning staff.
The fish, a relative of the piranha, was being repeatedly tossed in the air by the bird but was to big to go down its throat, news agency ANPp reported.
The 30cm fish was probably dumped in a canal after growing too big for an acquarium, experts said. The fish died of its injuries. It will go on show at the Naturalis museum.
