Last year 33 convicted criminals escaped while on home leave from psychiatric prison units, compared with 43 in 2006 and 99 in 2004, according to justice ministry officials.

A spokesman said the lower figure in 2007 was due to tighter procedures which were introduced after a number of serious incidents involving escapees in the previous year.
