CO2 targets must be realistic: Shell boss

European Union targets for reducing CO2 emissions must be realistic or they will turn people off, says Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer in an interview with Thursday’s Financieele Dagblad.

‘The targets must be achievable, because overstretched targets can have a demotivating effect and people will lose interest,’ Van der Veer said.
The EU wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020 compared with 2010.
Van der Veer said he was ‘not pessimistic’ that such a target could be reached if technological developments were positive.
But he warned against Dutch and German suggestions that the percentages might ‘escalate’ to 30% and 40%.
