Animal welfare in parliamentary spotlight

The cabinet’s plans to improve animal welfare come under the spotlight in parliament today with both the farming and health ministers up for questioning in a full day of debate.

In particular the animal rights party PvdD has accused ministers of not showing enough ambition in improving the lives of farm animals.
The cabinet’s bill shows ‘exactly what is wrong with keeping animals in the Netherlands,’ a spokesman told news agency ANP.
The animal welfare umbrella group CDON, which represents 22 organisations, also says the bill is a ‘missed opportunity’.
