Teachers’ wages to rise extra 10%

Teachers will get an average extra of 10% in their pay packets on top of the pay rise already agreed with unions, education minister Ronald Plasterk told MPs on Thursday.

The total cost of the extra pay rise, which is aimed at getting more people into teaching, is put at €1.1bn.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on his department’s budget, Plasterk also said he wants to increase total Dutch spending on education from 5.1% of GDP to 5.3% in 2011. The OECD average is 6.2%.
